Don is a remarkable individual with a zest for life. He held a private pilot's license for thirty-four years and clocked countless flight hours in light aircrafts. For the past 12 years, Don has been unable to fly, and despite a long-held dream, he has never had the chance to experience flying in a helicopter.
Don’s closest bond is with his sister, Alana. Prior to retirement, they both spent over 50 years farming fruit on their family farm in Oyama, BC. The loss of their parents prompted them to move to Kamloops, leaving behind the place they called home for their entire lives and a family legacy of helping their community. They both longed for the profound opportunity to fly back over Vernon and Oyama where they were born and raised.
The Chartwell Foundation was thrilled to help Don pursue his dream of flying again and reconnecting with the place where he and his sister share many beautiful memories. He was pleased to have his sister accompany him as he flew over the landscape of their beloved hometowns in a helicopter.
Don had nothing but positive things to say about his wish granting experience, maintaining that his least favourite part was when it came to an end! He hopes his story inspires other Canadian seniors to dream big regardless of their age, to never stop reaching for the stars or seeking opportunities to pursue their lifelong goals!
